  	C. R. Phillips, Ex-Auditor, Dies Clement R. Phillips, 92, who was believed to be the state's oldest Morse code operator and ex-county auditor, and Ohio's only 70-year member of the Odd Fellows Lodge, died at 4:15 p.m. Thursday in his home, 700 W. Elm St., after an illness of one year. Mr. Phillips recently was presented a 70-year pin by members of the local Odd Fellows Lodge, an organization in which he had been an active member until about a year ago. He joined the local lodge in 1884 when he was 21 years old. In 1909, Mr. Phillips was appointed as clerk of the Allen County Board of Commissioners, serving four years in that capacity. Six years later he was elected county auditor on the Democratic ticket, and later was reelected to a second term. He began his career as a telegraph operator in his home town, Mount Vernon, and later worked in offices in Cheyenne, Wyo., and Santa Fe, N.M. He also worked for 20 years at the S & J Tower near here. Born March 25, 1864, he was a member of the Olivet Presbyterian Church, and the Modern Woodmen of America. Survivors include a son, George E. Phillips, 225 E. Vine St., and a daughter, Mrs. Gerald Fess, 700 W. Elm St.; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. The body will remain in the Davis-Miller & Son Funeral Home where members of the Odd Fellows Lodge will conduct memorial services at 8 p.m. Sunday. Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in the Cathedral Chapel. The Rev. Philip Sorce will oficiate. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. (published in The Lima News, Friday, September 7, 1956)
