- Caroline was born in Aug, 1854 in Ohio, the daughter of
Frederick and Barbara Zeller.
Carolyn was a tall woman, according to her granddaughter, Mary
Hall. She was a school teacher and taught the Indians how to
speak English. After telephones were installed in that area,
Caroline had a telephone switchboard in her home which she
operated.
Gideon Shifferly died Dec 29, 1890, and is buried at Clymer
Cemetery. Carolyn married William Hughes (Hews), about 1897, and they
appear on the 1900 Census, as having been married 3 years.
Then Caroline married a Rev Wagoner in 1928, per Bernice Orr.
Caroline and Wagoner had been childhood sweethearts. They each
had married someone else, and he became a minister at Huron,
Michigan. After his wife died, Caroline saw the notice in the
Sunday School paper and sent her condolences. He answered her
letter, and then began stopping in Mt. Cory, to visit Caroline,
when he came down on business trips. Finally they decided to
get married.
It was the custom then to give couples a "Belling", and the
"Belling" for Caroline and Rev. Wagoner was said to be the
biggest in Hancock Co. People came from many miles around.
They were in their mid-70's at the time of their marriage, and
they probably really appreciated being so honored by all their
friends. After their marriage they lived in Mt. Cory.
For those who do not know what a "Belling" is, it is the same
as a "chivaree". There were no church weddings in those days,
such as are common today. A couple would be married in the
parsonage with one or two witnesses, or sometimes in the home
of the bride's parents. Within a few days, all their friends
would gather outside the couple's residence after dark and make
noise with bells or anything available until the group was
invited inside for refreshments. Usually there were no gifts
given to the bride and groom just a get-together to show how
happy everyone was for the new couple.
Carolyn died in 1935, in Mt. Cory, Ohio, and is buried in
Clymer Cemetery outside Mt. Cory, Ohio.
Information on Gideon and Caroline was compiled and submitted
by Jean Nepsund.
