- "Mrs. Barbara Hauenstein passed away at her home on Pearl Street, Tuesday evening after an illness of several weeks duration, caused by pneumonia. She had reached an advanced age and during her life made many friends by her kind ways and Christian spirit. She was a member of the Methodist Church, was an active worker and was teacher of a Sunday School class just before her fatal illness. Before her marriage her name was Barbara Shifferly and she was born at Mt. Eaton, and spent her girlhood there. Later she was wedded to John Hauenstein and raised a large family of children. Her husband preceded her to the spirit world many years ago, after which she moved to this place. Surviving her are seven children, four sons, who are Albert, who is in business here; Levi, a farmer, living north of here; Calvin of Bluffton; Samuel C., of Lima; and three daughters, Mrs. L. F. Parker, of this place; Mrs. Eli Depler and Mrs. Sam Stettler, of Bluffton. A large number of people were present at the funeral services to pay their last respects to this useful life."

Notes |
- Her maiden surname is spelled both Schiferli and Schifferli in "The Hauenstein and Schifferly Families of Ohio."
"Barbara Schifferli was born Feb. 14, 1836, the daughter of John and Barbara (Werder Schifferli. She died March 31, 1914 and is buried in the Emmanuel Reformed Cemetery, Allen Co., Ohio. [According to her death certificate she was buried in the Gratz Cemetery]. According to Bertha Goetsch, Barbara was related to the other Schifferli family that settled in Allen County. Barbara's father, John, was the brother of Andreas Schifferli. Barbara Werder first married Jacob Schifferly, and they had a son named Johannes. When Jacob died, Barbara married Jacob's brother, John. All three men: Jacob, John, and Andreas were the sons of Hans Jacob and Elizabeth (Dietiker) Schifferli. So far research has been unable to connect this Schifferly family with the main Schifferly family of this book, even though they both came from Tegerfelden. If they are related, it is farther back than any records we have found."
